Suntec City was a project commissioned by a private Hong Kong consortium, which included prolific billionaires such as Li Ka-shing and Run Run Shaw. As Suntec City was a massive project, it had to be completed in phases between 1995 and 1997.
The construction began on 18 January 1992, and was completed on 22 July 1997, costing a whopping US$2.3 billion.
The Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre (SICEC) was part of Suntec City’s development. SICEC was officially opened on 30th August 1995 by then Singapore’s Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Hong Kong’s biggest Cantopop Diva, Anita Mui, sang at the opening show to rousing applause.
SICEC became known as Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre (shortened to Suntec Singapore), as part of a rebranding exercise in 2004.
In August 2012, Suntec Singapore underwent a S$184 million modernisation programme and reopened in September 2013. The modernisations programme saw our venue transform into a high-tech facility, with a massive digital screen that welcomes our visitors into our venue.
Stay tuned for more updates, as we track our history towards our modernisation!
