We’ve got news! By 1 July 2019, Suntec Singapore will phase out plastic straws. Over 2.2 million plastic straws are used in Singapore every day. To change this, we’re joining over 270 Food and Beverage outlets in the city and phasing out plastic straws from our convention centre. This is a major industry wide effort and a proud achievement of the PACT (Plastic ACTion - WWF-Singapore initiative supported by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and Zero Waste Singapore
Join us in our effort to #UseLessPlastic!
On Kindness Day on 24th May, our staff gave out "Thank You" cards and yellow gerberas to their peers to show their appreciation to one another. The office was filled with excitement as each person went up to their teammates to pass flowers to them, expressing their gratitude for the teamwork.
Our Senior HR Director, Ms Grace Yang, went to every single staff in the office to pass them a “Thank You” note. Every staff’s contribution to the company was being appreciated by the management. The atmosphere in the office was lively, filled with smiles on the faces of our staff.
Kindness does not stop on Kindness Day, so do join us in showing your appreciation to your colleagues as well as people around you, no matter what day of the week.
On Labour Day this year, we decided to show our appreciation for the hard work of the Bus Captains, whose services help to bring our staff and members of the public to our venue. Working with our Chef and his team, we prepared a total of 400 boxes of cookies to be distributed to the Bus Captains that drive past our bus stops.
Our CEO Mr Arun Madhok, and our Senior HR Director, Ms Grace Yang, came down immediately after the May Day Rally to join us in the distribution. We had energetic staff volunteers who took their personal time off from their public holiday to help in the distribution too. They cheered and held signs to say thank you to the Bus Captains for their hard work!
It was a fulfilling activity, and the staff were contented to see the smiles on the bus captains, as we surprised them with a small token of gratitude. Do join us in showing appreciation for the bus captains and wish them a Happy Labour Day when you board their buses!
For a second time this year, Suntec Singapore visited the elderly residents at SilverACE Bukit Merah, a senior activity centre for vulnerable elderly in lower-income neighbourhoods. Earlier this year, we dropped by just before Chinese New Year, to have a pre-Chinese New Year celebration with the residents.
Our Human Resources Executive, Mr James Chua, coordinated all of the activities to make this event a success. He conceptualised the games and activities, and even sourced out for sponsors to gift some items to the residents. One of our staff members, Ms Joycelin Pang also sponsored some reading glasses for the elderly residents.
The elderly residents were engaged in fun-filled activities such as crafts and games, facilitated by our staff volunteers. They were also treated to delectable dishes served by Executive Chef Alfred Lee and his team.
It was a whole-day affair and our staff volunteers were delighted and heartened to see the smiles on the faces of the elderly residents. Suntec Singapore is committed to visiting the elderly residents once every quarter to brighten their stay at the senior activity centre.
As part of the Earth Day week, Suntec Singapore invited Sembcorp to give a presentation to our staff on recycling. The educational presentation taught our staff how to identify the different types of recyclables, since not all waste materials can be recycled.
We were also taught on the proper handling of recyclables. Who knew that a small food stain on the recyclable material could deem the whole batch of waste as unrecyclable! It was also important for us to know that bottles and aluminium drink cans need to be rinsed through or fully emptied before they can be put up into the recycling bins.
We hope that through this talk, our staff will be able to further educate fellow colleagues, friends and families on the proper recycling methods.
As we celebrate Earth Day on 22nd April, we reflect on how our single-use plastic consumption is heavily polluting our ecosystem. Our planet is in a dire situation, with plastics being reported contaminating our food chains. Microplastics have been found entering the diet of fish, shellfish, and birds, as well as our own food. Plastics are carcinogenic when ingested, and this will increase the risk of cancer.
Eight million tons of plastic flow into the ocean every year, and straws comprise 0.025 per cent of that. Despite the small percentage, going straw-free is a good start in helping to reduce ocean pollution. Recently a video went viral, where a plastic straw had to be removed from a turtle’s nose by marine biologists. Plastic straws which have been irresponsibly discarded, and landing up in the ocean may physically hurt ocean wildlife.
In conjunction with Earth Day, Suntec Singapore is proud to announce that we are going Straw-Free! Going Straw-Free will be the first step in our efforts towards zero-waste. We want to thank the following partners for their support, and giving us valuable advice in making this happen: Singapore Youth for Climate Action - SYCA, Zero Waste Singapore, Plastic-Lite Singapore.
It was a night to remember, as the students of Nanyang Polytechnic’s (NYP) School of Interactive and Digital Media's (SIDM), had their graduation showcase. Among those mingling in the crowd were invited industry guests, NYP alumni and parents of the graduating students.
The booths were filled with interesting and interactive exhibits, as the students presented their work to industry guests, in hopes of scoring a job upon graduation. Walking down the aisle, the booths were a visual spectacle, filled with graphics and 3D cutouts of the students’ work.
Suntec Singapore was the venue sponsor this year, in support of our local talents. This year, our CEO Mr Arun Madhok was invited as the Guest of Honour to address the graduating class of 2019.
“I see talent which has been taken and moulded, and put together to create to exceptional skills, that can be used in a growing industry”, said Mr Madhok on the extraordinary exhibits put up by the students.
Join us in congratulating NYP SIDM class of 2019!

Suntec Singapore was the recipient of Dun & Bradstreet Business Eminence Award 2019 on 14th March 2019.
It was a night to remember, as our management team attended the black-tie event, decked in their smart suits and elegant dresses. As the management team got up on stage to receive the award and have their photos taken, they were awash with euphoria. The flashlights coming from the cameras gave flashbacks of the hard work and dedication that they have put in together with their teams, leading up to this award.

In support of Earth Hour this year, we joined organisations worldwide in switching off our non-essential lightings and our building façade lighting. As the central business district is slowly blanketed in darkness, a glimmer of hope shines through that the earth will be saved, as we bring awareness to climate change and electricity usage.
We hope that through this simple act every year, we can bring awareness to everyone so that the future of our children and their grandchildren, will be preserved. Join us next year in switching off, and plugging back to Mother Earth!
To foster a culture of wellness, Suntec Singapore organises annual health screenings and regular wellness activities for our employees. On 12th March, our employees attended an on-site health screening that was arranged for them.
Having the health screening onsite, our employees have the ease of access to it and can get themselves checked during their working hours. Many employees generally find it challenging to schedule health screenings amidst their busy lifestyle. By bringing the health screening to the workplace, we hope that more will be encouraged to get themselves checked.
The health screening is holistic, with many different stations examining different components of the health. Our employees were treated to a buffet breakfast after the screening, as they had to fast the night before having their blood tests.
Suntec Singapore is committed to investing in the health of our employees, and we encourage them to adopt healthy lifestyles. The health screening will return again next year to ensure the well being of our employees.
Suntec City was a project commissioned by a private Hong Kong consortium, which included prolific billionaires such as Li Ka-shing and Run Run Shaw. As Suntec City was a massive project, it had to be completed in phases between 1995 and 1997.
The construction began on 18 January 1992, and was completed on 22 July 1997, costing a whopping US$2.3 billion.
The Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre (SICEC) was part of Suntec City’s development. SICEC was officially opened on 30th August 1995 by then Singapore’s Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Hong Kong’s biggest Cantopop Diva, Anita Mui, sang at the opening show to rousing applause.
SICEC became known as Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre (shortened to Suntec Singapore), as part of a rebranding exercise in 2004.
In August 2012, Suntec Singapore underwent a S$184 million modernisation programme and reopened in September 2013. The modernisations programme saw our venue transform into a high-tech facility, with a massive digital screen that welcomes our visitors into our venue.
